Agriculture is not just for farmers
I grew up in a farming family, with a dad who worked full time in agricultural policy. When I went to university, I knew one thing: I did not want anything to do with agriculture. Agriculture meant a bunch of boring old men sitting around talking about equipment or corn prices. I was young, wanted to speak multiple languages, travel the world. I started down the path of international studies, but felt that it wasn't all that I wanted in a degree program. My dear old dad pointed out that economics may interest me, and suggested I wander over to the Agricultural and Applied Economics program. I took his advice, begrudgingly, and boy am I glad I did. Turns out agriculture can be a lot more than commodity prices and old men. Today I work for a nonprofit research organization that works around the world in international development and the food and agriculture sector. I am working currently on a project in Haiti, helping to connect smallholder farmers to private sector buyers. And guess what? I get to travel, work in multiple languages, and help others figure out how to improve the livelihoods of those working around the world in our most important employment: feeding the world.
