Education at Any Cost
For me, it was never even a question that I would attend college. It was expected, no matter what the cost. My mom has been saving up for my education since before I was born, and she’s always taught me that education was the most important gift she could give me. But I’m only halfway through school and that savings is nearly gone. Given the ever-increasing debt incurred by students, my family included, I can’t help but wonder if it’s truly worth the cost. According to a study by Brookings, in the past decade the average student loan debt per full time student has increased nearly 60%. Surely I could find meaningful work without spending four years incurring crushing debt, right? That being said, I don’t think the investment is a complete waste. I wouldn’t be in school if I did. I love learning, and I know without a college degree I wouldn’t be able to compete even for entry-level positions in my field after graduation. Still, the thought of facing a tough job market with just a degree and massive debt after graduation is intimidating to say the least.
